- Approximately
800,000 people in South Carolina (33.16% of the population) do not have
a high school diploma.
- Approximately
130,000 people in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester Counties are
at Level I Literacy, the lowest measurable level. This means they can
do no more than sign their names or total simple deposit slips.
- Approximately
40 percent of our 549,000 tri-county residents are between the ages
of 24 and 49, prime years for working and raising families.
- Of this group,
approximately 30,000 are the working poor.
- Between 20 and
35 percent of this group may not have high school credentials.
- There are more
than 20,000 nonproficient speakers of English in the area.
- South Carolina
is 25% Hispanic.
Trident
Literacy Association is helping.
The
mission of Trident Literacy Association is to increase literacy in Charleston,
Berkeley, and Dorchester counties by offering instruction, using a self-paced,
individualized curriculum in reading, writing, mathematics, English as
a Second Language, GED preparation, and basic computer use.
With the help of
more than 200 volunteers and dozens of community collaborators, Trident
Literacy Association (TLA) serves more than 2000 students annually.
Founded in 1972,
Trident Literacy Association has a proven record of positive outcomes.
